but would not take his wife out to Hong Kong
with him. He has visited Hong Kong, but does
not know it well. He had not contemplated an
application for oversea work before the Board
of Education wrote to him about Hong Kong.
he seems to feel irresistibly drawn towards
further work in the East. He is much attracted
by the prospect and feels no doubt on the score
of health.

Sir Andrew Caldecott was inclined,
subject to further consideration, to prefer him
und attached considerable value to Mr. Cuttie,/though he admitted that secondary
education problems in Malaya were very different
from Hong Kong problems, and also to his
personality and reputation in Malaya. Mr.
Gent and I were most favourably impressed by
Mr. Nicol, but felt doubtful on the score of
health. We questioned his stock of energy and
driving power in a climate admittedly difficult
for part of the year. I felt also that his
educational experience in this country was
